Have a toddler AND a baby but not ready to commit

Have a toddler AND a baby but not ready to commit to double stroller life?
OR your toddler refuses to sit in a stroller? Consider getting a little kick board or piggy back board and instantly turn your stroller into a double.
This is great for shorter walks, grocery trips, airports and in my experience works really well from about age 2/2.5 but you know your child!
And if you have a headstrong 2 or 3 year old (and I mean which 2 or 3 yr old isn’t headstrong?!) then they may love this independence but are still contained and their little legs get a break!
It’s also budget and storage friendly if you don’t think you will need or use a full on double stroller.
We love our @uppababy vista because it’s so versatile but see if your stroller has this piggy back option!

Ever have one of those days? Those exhausted mom days where it feels like everything is out of control?
Yeah, me too. And you know what really works?
A reset.
You don’t need to start over the next day or hide in your bed until the next week. You just need to create a shift in your energy and often that comes from changing the location.
Getting outside and walking the baby is truly the best thing for me and it checks so many boxes 📦:
✅ fresh air and daylight are good for our mood
✅ exercise for mama who struggles to find time to workout
✅ opportunities to phone a friend or listen to that juicy podcast - hello @melrobbins who has the best podcast of all
✅ think time - when last did you just let yourself daydream and think? I’m sure it’s been a while - my best ideas 💡 come when I’m in motion or in the shower 🚿😝
✅ even if baby stays in the stroller the whole time, the outdoors is magical and somehow tuckers them out
✅ it costs nothing and you gain everything so no excuses!!

Despite having a hard time reconciling going back

Despite having a hard time reconciling going back to work after my first child and needing a nanny, let me tell you, professional Nannies know What’s up! And something I always noticed was how much time they spent outside with their kids.
AND how they would always have meals al fresco!
SO taking a 🍃 out of my nanny’s book, if you find your toddler refusing her breakfast or lunch, consider changing up the environment and eating outside!
From personal experience, they love not being confined to a high chair and I love them eating outside because if they mess it’s less to clean up!
PLUS I’m a HUGE believer in letting kids choose how much and WHAT they eat and I feel a lot less pressure when they can come and go as they please Montessori style and eat as much or as little as their tummy tells them.
IMO we have lost the ability to intuitively know when we are full and what our bodies need and this starts in childhood!

Do you shop with your kids?!
Sometimes you just have to!!
Here’s what has been helping me:
✨ consistency: I talk to them over and over, that we don’t get something every shopping trip, sometimes we don’t find what we like and that’s ok. Rather wait for something you really want than settle
✨ we practice. I didn’t have to take them with me today but I think it’s important to teach them these lessons of delayed gratification and that we don’t always get a new toy when I’m feeling more relaxed and calm
✨ I want to involve them in buying gifts for their friends - taking a present to a birthday party is like the “entrance fee” and why should I do all the work for a party im not even attending - my kids should take ownership by coming along, selecting the gift, writing a card, in whichever way possible - I don’t expect them to drive by I DO expect them to show up with a giving attitude
✨ you can’t always get what you want right now: and that’s ok. Yes it’s normal, they are going to see and want a lot of stuff. So I say you can choose one thing (this requires some patience on my part because it truly IS overwhelming) and we will keep it for your birthday or Halloween or Christmas. So far this has really worked and makes me feel at least like we are reaching a compromise without a full on Target meltdown.
✨gives me an idea of what they actually want for Christmas/birthday etc so we are buying more intentionally
✨ and sometimes you come home with another pup but wrap it up for a month’s time and call it a win 🤪

Oops I did it again! Here we go! Traveling to New

Oops I did it again! Here we go! Traveling to New York from Austin is about 3-4hrs depending on the tail winds and if you get lucky.
As always I bring our travel stroller - I’m loving the @nuna travel stroller (my newsletter goes into so much detail about the essential gear we use when traveling with kids - DM me “travel” for the link) as well as I needed a car seat for this trip to get to the airport and then I checked the car seat. The stroller I gate check before getting on the plane and I love that we have a proper bag for ours to reduce likelihood of damage.
Even though I travel with my bags on the plane, I like to put easy access items in my bag pack that goes under my seat. So you’ll see in the video that I brought Neve a change of clothes in case as well as a diaper for every hour of the journey even though I probably will only have to change her once if even! Always good to overpack in the diaper department.
I also planned out her outfits for the 4 day trip so I had things to mix and match. I usually back for 3 days and then literally wash, rinse and repeat. Depending on how certain laundry is.
When you intentional plan to fly with a baby and mentally prepare that there are things you cannot control, you will be pleasantly surprised by how it will all work out and you will learn a lot about yourself in the process.
Confidence in yourself and your parenting will help you be more willing to take the leap when it comes to travel and change because hey sometimes things change or you need to travel whether you like it or not! You may as well start practicing!

“You’re crazy to have any more kids!” Said basically EVERYONE!! ☹️ kinda sucks when people inset their own opinions and biases on your life but isn’t that just human nature right?
I’m not going to lie: I was nervous adding another baby to the “we are already stretched so thin” sitch. Plus we had just started to come out of that baby and toddler fog where our kids were getting to be more independent, more able to regulate their emotions (kinda ha) and sleeping better.
Adding another one seemed like it just might break us.
Plus it would mean a sizeable age gap between 1 and 3 - almost 6 years. If felt like “starting over” and in a lot of ways it was.
And in so many, it wasn’t.
If I could bottle third time mom confidence and experience and gift it to my first time mamas, I would.. because this whole third child experience has been night and day for me from number 1 and even number 2.
And the bond that a child 6 years older than there sibling has.. well it’s just incredible. So whether you have one in between or you have a “bigger gap” between your kids but it’s on your heart to have another, DO it! Don’t let society tell you otherwise.
Are you interested in the “age gap” convo? I Definitely have thoughts hahaha are you surprised?! 😜
People (and babies are people) enter our lives at the exact right moment we need them too otherwise we wouldn’t have them! Trust in this!
And yeah about that bottle - well I can’t bottle up third child confidence but I can help you get their the direct, shorter way A to B vs chasing after your tail, running in circles and maybe never getting to your destination.

Ah the age old question - how do I get my baby on a schedule and when should I do it?!
Newborns can’t be spoiled and don’t really have a strict schedule in the beginning.
WE as parents want a schedule so we can plan our lives but really baby is here to smile and coo and cry and play and poop and sleep. That’s their job in the beginning!
So try and not put all this unnecessary pressure on yourself to get them on a clock-based schedule straight away.
The only thing I know for sure is that it will change!!
I like to follow sleep 😴 eat 🤱🏼 play 🧸 as a general guideline while we are establishing a schedule.
I also like to focus on getting baby on a day/night path ie sleeping for longer stretches at night and realizing day time is for playing and eating more often.
I also tell my clients that a baby is like a cellphone 📱- they need to be charging up (🍼) during the day so that within a 24 hr period they are consuming most of their milk during the day. Depending on age they will still be needing 1-2-3 feeds at night.
So that’s my 2 cents - putting pressure on yourself to have this perfect timed scheduled at 6 weeks old is not necessarily helpful so please be kind to yourself! And take a nap! Naps always make things better!!

Just a fun little laugh out loud moment!
And also an appreciation for a hungry toddler who’s enjoying her food, the location of her table and dining Al fresco HER way.
If you baby or toddler does not want to eat for the love of all things holy, DONT force them - it will only backfire, don’t bribe with dessert or shame them.
Children inherently won’t starve themselves AND we have to ask ourselves if we are forcing them to eat because we have an idea in our heads about what is enough and we actually know how they are feeling? Or whether it’s just more convenient if they eat when and where we want them to? And whether that is worth the power struggle that comes with food?
I would hazard a guess to say it’s not worth it. I don’t know if I have ever met a woman who hasn’t experienced body issues on some level in their lives so let’s start being intentional and taking notice of our relationship with food so we can do better for our kids.
And I also think having a third kid mentality now would have served me well for the first kid. But this is why we are on this earth to learn our unique lessons.

I know Julie - what’s up with the deeper downer of late..?!
Well not so much Debbie downer as keeping it real and sharing my struggles.
When we share deep areas of ourselves that may make us feel shameful or less than we give light to the dark and we all know things aren’t as scary when they’re in the light ✨
Do you relate to any of these struggles in your life?
Is there a struggle that you didn’t expect?
We romanticize parenting so much in our society and then when we actually experience it, we think there is something wrong with us for feeling the way we do.
There isn’t.
We are all human after all.

Not much more to say than that.
I will say though (because you know me and my opinions needing their own stage over here!) that by structuring my life to be more intentional, taking a really hard look at how I show up in the world: the good, the bad and the ugly (and there are all those things in all of us), I have confined to learn so much about myself so I can be present, enjoy my kids and still not lose all of me.
I kinda want that for all my mamas out there. I invest my time and energy in helping other moms thrive because I know they are the frontline to raising good kids. They are teaching our kids patience and kindness and opening space to be creative and curious and they are raising this next generation. The world needs us to be compassionate and kind towards others. If I can help moms make time for themselves more, role model what’s important to them to their kids and be happier over all - then I am doing my job over here.
Sending love and light to all of you reading this wherever you are in your day and the world. We are all connected and we need to start acting like it.

Most injuries in the home occur through falling…
AND
our children need to learn to navigate natural “hazards” and challenges in their daily lives and their homes knowing that we have their back and are there for them.
Does Neve climbing up stairs make my heart RACE?
Well thanks for asking - YES it does! Even watching videos makes me nervous!
AND
She exudes confidence and wants to do it so I TRUST her! And I give her opportunities to practice this important skills without touching her or hovering too close because she’s got this.
Here’s something to think about…
Stairs are everywhere.. we have to learn to climb!
Mama, if you feel anxious and overwhelmed with worry and unease when it comes to your kids and parenting, I would I highly recommend listening to my podcast (The Beanbag Cafe Podcast with Julie Fernandes - find it wherever you listen to podcasts) because learning to trust our intuition as parents and trusting our kids is my jam and I talk about it a lot.
I would also recommend reaching out, hoping on my calendar and talking about your fears and concerns and hopes and dreams for your kids because I know you will leave our conversation feeling seen, energized and more confident!

Oh I wear many hats in a 20 min period 😝 🎩 how about you?!
It is truly astounding that my head doesn’t fall off my body some days!
Things that help me stay out of overwhelm
🤪 writing out everything I need to get done for the week - stays on the page and outta my brain 🧠
😮 planning out meals - I don’t even meal prep unless it’s seamless and I cook something alongside the current meal - DECIDING what to cook is the overwhelming part
😀 having “negative” space on the calendar - aka NOTHING planned so then if I have time to do more or something crops up I can actually do it - this helps to offload the work load for the following week

Had to catch this little moment in time because one minute they are toddler along and falling everywhere and the next minute it’s toothy grins and school photos!
Often I feel such a responsibility to do things “right”, have the perfect house, get them to eat all their vegetables, have them say please and thank you and go to bed at 7pm.
Then I look at these photos and think WOW, yes those things are important and in their best interest but sometimes I can also loosen the reins and just enjoy my kids, you know?
When you get clear on what your values are, where your heart really is, in an effort to know what you want (because often that is muddy) then you can focus on things that bring you joy and appreciate these blessings in your life.

Honest opinion!! Do you think this is going to work??! I will let you know AFTER Halloween!
I wanted to share my thoughts BEFORE the holiday in case you are looking for alternative ways to experience trick or treating!
Now my kids are only 4 and 7 but they KNOW about Halloween and trick or treating now and last year, their heads nearly rolled off their bodies when they realized what actually happens at traditional Halloween!
They got more candy than they could ever eat! And to be honest the real fun comes in with the actual walk around the neighborhood, seeing all the decorations and grabbing fistfuls, even more than eating all of it until you want to puke!
I just can’t in good conscience let them eat bucket loads of candy that is typically not great quality and really just “Halloween tax” to stop your house being egged in opinion! 🙀
So my plane is for them to use their candy 🍭 as currency 💴 to “buy” a more meaningful, long lasting gift that they really want. They have already chosen what they plan to “buy” and are so excited!
I have some candy that they actually like and have been eyeing that they can purchase too and this way I can control the amount the have and encourage them to trust their bodies and indulge in moderation. The goal is not anti-candy, it’s how can we have a reasonable amount without making ourselves sick and loaded to on junky sweets?!
How do you manage all the treats from Halloween? Do you do a “switch witch 🧙🏽‍♀️” like I’m planning to or let them have at it?
